Little Greene is an independent, family-owned British paint and wallpaper company with roots going back to 1773. If you haven't heard of it yet, you're not alone — it's one of Europe's most beloved paint brands and has only recently arrived in the United States.Founded by chemist David Mottershead and run today with his children Ben and Ruth, it is the largest family-owned independent paint maker in Britain — and widely regarded as one of the finest paint brands in the world. Their factory sits in the foothills of Mount Snowdon in North Wales, where paint is still made by hand by time-served craftspeople. Even the sample pots are filled by hand from a glass jug.
Little Greene launched in the United States recently, initially available only on the East Coast. We are thrilled to bring it to the Midwest for the first time.

Heritage Home Supply in Andersonville is the first (and currently only) destination for Little Greene from Chicago to the West Coast. That means you have access to one of the world's great paint brands right here in your neighborhood. Come see us at 5117 N Clark St, or order online through this site.

We get asked this regularly. Both are premium British paint brands with beautiful colour ranges and strong design followings — and both are worth considering for the right project.
The differences come down to formula and practicality. Farrow & Ball recommends a separate primer for most surfaces before applying their topcoat. Little Greene's Intelligent range is self-priming — no separate primer needed on most surfaces, which saves time and cost. Farrow & Ball's signature Estate Emulsion is wipeable but not fully washable. Little Greene's Intelligent Matt is fully washable and significantly more durable for family homes and high-traffic walls.
Both brands are low-VOC and water-based. The colour philosophies are different — Farrow & Ball has a tightly curated palette of around 132 colours; Little Greene offers over 200, with deeper historical range.
Heritage Home Supply carries Little Greene. Come in and we'll put the colour cards on the table.
-
Most premium paints still require a separate primer. Little Greene's Intelligent range — Intelligent Matt, Eggshell, Satin, Gloss, and Floor Paint — uses proprietary Intelligent Grip™ technology that combines primer and topcoat in a single tin. Applied directly to almost any surface: plaster, wood, metal, tile, glass, uPVC, melamine, and concrete. No separate primer, no extra step, no extra cost.
The Intelligent finishes are also up to 15 times tougher than standard decorative paint — washable, stain-resistant, and formulated to last significantly longer before repainting is needed.
-
For most surfaces, no. Little Greene's Intelligent paints are self-priming and can be applied directly from the tin to almost any household surface. If you are working with a particularly porous or bare surface, or making a dramatic colour change, Little Greene's Intelligent ASP — an All Surface Primer — can be ordered in any Little Greene colour as both primer and undercoat in a single coat. Ask us at our Chicago showroom if you're unsure.
-
Yes on both counts. The full Intelligent range — Intelligent Matt, Eggshell, Satin, Gloss, Floor Paint, and Intelligent ASP primer — is certified Child Safe under EN 71-3:2019, the European toy safety standard. All are water-based, completely solvent-free, low odour, and carry the lowest possible VOC content. Free from animal-derived ingredients and safe for use in occupied spaces. Among the most responsible paints available anywhere.
-
We'd strongly advise against it. Little Greene uses up to six different raw pigments in a single formula, which allows their colours to beautifully adapt and shift in changing light. A standard spectrophotometer or color match scanner at a hardware store cannot detect or replicate this. Trying to mix a Little Greene colour into a cheaper base will lose the brand's distinct depth, sheen, and finish. The colour on the wall simply won't be the same.
We mix all Little Greene paint on site at Heritage Home Supply using Little Greene's own bases and pigment system — the only way to guarantee the colour and finish you're paying for.

We carry six collections, each with a distinct character:
National Trust Papers I, II, III & IV — four collections of designs painstakingly redrawn from original patterns found at National Trust properties across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Spanning over 400 years of British decoration — from Georgian florals to Arts & Crafts motifs to bold chinoiserie murals. A portion of every roll sold supports the National Trust's conservation work in the UK.
Storybook Papers — whimsical designs drawn from childhood artefacts and original artwork found in National Trust houses. Playful without being precious, and surprisingly versatile.
In the Garden — a different kind of botanical. Eight designs inspired by the grand grounds, individual plants, and historic artefacts of the National Trust's most beloved gardens. Lush, layered, and unlike anything else on the market.

Yes, and we strongly recommend it. The full sample books for every collection are available at Heritage Home Supply in Andersonville. Pattern scale, colourway, and texture read very differently in person than on a screen. Come in before you commit.
-
Measure the height and total width of each wall you're papering, then account for the pattern repeat — larger repeats require more paper to match at seams and mean you'll need additional rolls. Add 10–15% for waste and cutting. Bring your measurements in store, and we'll help you calculate before you order.
-
